K9s For Warriors is the nation’s largest provider of service dogs to veterans suffering from the invisible wounds of war, such as Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. Our unique, in-house program helps change the lives of American heroes by pairing them with a battle buddy, who was likely a rescue dog and then teaching him or her to utilize that dog to mitigate the symptoms of their wounds. In order to continue the great work we are doing, we are in need of a Warrior Education Specialist to join our amazing team!

Role and Responsibilities

Under the general direction and supervision of the Manager of Warrior Training, in collaboration with the Director of Warrior Training & Education the Warrior Education Specialist is responsible for overseeing all aspects of Warrior Education and K9 integration, including but not limited to, virtual and in-person instruction, providing and monitoring attendance and completion of required course study, and presenting class lectures, as required. The Warrior Education Specialist will be required to maintain training standards to include updates to training methods/materials, as well as pursuing continuing education. The Warrior Education Specialist will provide direct support for all Warriors throughout the process and assist with recertifications, transition interviews, and remedial training, as required.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Preparing classes for Team Training

  • Review upcoming Warrior applications to familiarize yourself with each Warrior’s disabilities and training needs.
  • Plan, schedule, direct monthly educational activities prior to arrival on Campus.
  • Create a positive, dynamic learning environment based on mutual respect and understanding.
  • Complete phone screenings and follow-up calls for each Warrior class.

Warrior Education

  • Facilitate classes in the areas of Dog Health & Nutrition, ADA Law & Housing Act, life skills and problem-solving for each Warrior class.
  • Review and administer written/virtual exams as well as Physical/Virtual Orientations each month
  • Assist with and participate in the graduation ceremony each month
  • Conduct virtual classes based on agreed-upon curricula.
  • Mentor, guide, and assist Warriors through obstacles to achieve success

Misc. Tasks

  • Carry an after-hours duty phone on a rotating basis.
  • Maintain detailed education and evaluation notes as per policies and procedures.
  • Attend weekly staff meetings and events, and/or conduct presentations, as needed
  • Always representing the organization in a professional manner
  • Assist in giving campus tours and check presentations
  • Assist the Veterinary Office with class dogs requiring medical care or preventatives during class
  • Assist Warrior Trainers with Class support, as needed

Virtual Class Instructor

  • Develop and adapt course syllabus, course materials, and assessments, ensuring they align with educational standards and Warrior needs.
  • Create engaging and interactive course materials, activities, and assessments to support Warrior learning and Service Dog handling skills.
  • Collaborate with Department instructional designers, content developers, and subject matter experts to improve course materials and ensure alignment with course objectives.

Qualifications and Education Requirements

  • Associate's degree or equivalent work experience is required
  • Required Minimum of 1.5 years' experience working with veterans at any Veteran Service Organizations and/or Department of Veterans Affairs
  • Experience in distance learning having taken or given virtual classes
  • Experience motivating and communicating with Veterans with disabilities preferred
  • Possess patience to interact with challenging clients
  • Strong verbal, written, and oral communication skills; this position requires the candidate to speak clearly and effectively and to listen to and hear clients who may be challenging and/or in distress.
  • Valid driver’s license, and meeting policy requirements for company auto insurance is required
  • Prior experience as an online instructor or in distance education delivery preferred.

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to perform the essential functions of this job successfully. This role routinely involves standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets, and fax machines.

Ability to exert a moderate to extensive amount of physical effort, including stooping, crouching, twisting, turning, walking stairs, climbing, and lifting fifty (50) pounds individually. Exposure to unpleasant odors or sounds. Exposure to chemicals, loud noises, and inclement weather.
