Job Description

Estimator – Large-Scale Agriculture & Livestock Construction

We are seeking an experienced Estimator with a strong background in large-scale agriculture, livestock, and commercial livestock production construction to join our team. This role is critical in ensuring accurate cost estimates, trade partner bids, and material take-offs for feedlots, dairy farms, hog barns, poultry facilities, and other large-scale livestock production operations . The Estimator will be responsible for managing the financial forecasting of projects ranging from livestock housing and processing facilities to manure management systems and feed storage infrastructure .

From initial project conception through finalizing construction documents, the Estimator will ensure all cost assessments align with industry standards, client expectations, and project deadlines.

Key Responsibilities

1. Project Design & Scope Review

  • Evaluate initial project scope, design plans, and specifications in collaboration with the Preconstruction Manager (PCM) .
  • Identify and resolve scope gaps related to livestock-specific construction needs, ventilation systems, biosecurity measures, and waste management solutions .
  • Assess site-specific challenges, such as drainage requirements, soil conditions, animal welfare regulations, and environmental compliance .

2. Estimating & Cost Development

  • Analyze blueprints, engineering reports, and project specifications to determine labor, materials, and time requirements for livestock housing and handling facilities .
  • Prepare and issue vendor and subcontractor Requests for Quotes (RFQs) , ensuring livestock-specific needs (e.g., reinforced flooring for high-traffic areas, climate control systems, waste treatment solutions) are met.
  • Compile and organize trade partner bids, ensuring accurate comparison and cost evaluation.
  • Develop detailed cost estimates, applying appropriate phase codes for livestock and agricultural construction categories .
  • Resolve bid discrepancies by gathering and verifying critical cost information.
  • Provide cost trend analysis and identify areas for potential savings without compromising quality.

3. Material Procurement & Bid Execution

  • Verify and adjust material take-offs to align with project specifications for barns, milking parlors, feed storage, and manure lagoons .
  • Coordinate with Account Managers, Project Managers, and the PCM to determine preferred vendors based on expertise in large-scale livestock and agricultural construction .
  • Transfer subcontractor bid details to the Project Manager for contract finalization and execution.
  • Work closely with purchasing teams to ensure estimates are converted into accurate material orders.

4. Project Review & Adjustments

  • Assist the PCM with change order pricing for scope modifications, unforeseen site conditions, or client-requested adjustments.
  • Conduct site visits to assess real-world conditions and verify project alignment with budgetary expectations.
  • Participate in pre- and post-construction meetings to refine cost-tracking strategies and identify efficiency opportunities for future projects.
  • Provide insights on project financials and suggest process improvements based on completed

livestock and commercial agricultural projects.

5. Additional Responsibilities

  • Manage the full estimating process from conceptual budgeting to final bid execution for feedlots, dairy operations, poultry houses, and processing plants .
  • Maintain strong industry knowledge by attending construction workshops and staying updated on advancements in large-scale livestock building techniques and materials .

  • Strong proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Word, and Outlook .
  • Excellent organizational, written, and verbal communication skills.
  • Experience with construction cost analysis, bidding, and budget forecasting .
  • Ability to work independently and under pressure while meeting tight deadlines.

Working Environment

  • Position may be remote or based in our Columbus, Nebraska office .
  • Travel to job sites may be required, including walking on farmland, feedlots, and navigating livestock production facilities .
  • Work will involve both office-based estimating tasks and on-site construction evaluation .
