Why this job – BOOKKEEPER / PAYROLL SPECIALIST

A well-established, mid-sized construction firm with deep roots in Montana and Wyoming is seeking a  Bookkeeper / Payroll Specialist to join its dedicated accounting team. This is a pivotal role where you’ll take ownership of all aspects of payroll, reporting directly to both the Controller and Head of HR. When not focused on payroll, you’ll lend support across key accounting functions, including month-end close, financial reporting, and job costing.

The company is currently undergoing exciting changes, including new system implementations aimed at streamlining operations. You’ll play a hands-on role in these transitions—gaining exposure to new tools and sharpening your skills in the process. What You'll Actually Do:

• Process weekly payroll for 100+ employees across multiple locations, ensuring accuracy in wages, deductions, and full compliance with federal and state regulations
• Maintain accurate and up-to-date payroll records, support internal and external audits, and manage year-end reporting and payroll account reconciliations
• Contribute to the implementation and ongoing optimization of payroll and HR software systems
• Identify and support process improvement initiatives, including payroll-related analyses and workflow enhancements
• Assist with month-end close tasks such as preparing journal entries and supporting broader accounting functions including job costing and financial reporting

To Be Successful in This Role, You Will Need:

• Bachelor’s degree preferred; open to candidates with equivalent experience
• Minimum of 2 years of progressive accounting experience
• Prior payroll processing experience required
• Proficient with ERP systems, payroll software, and Excel
• Hands-on experience with general ledger work and financial statement preparation
• Proactive, detail-oriented, and a strong problem solver with a collaborative mindset

Where and How Much:

• Target Compensation $60K - $70K + discretionary bonus
• 100% in office – Bozeman
• 3 Weeks PTO | 75% employer-paid health benefits | 401K w/4% match | Parking onsite
